Motivation is not a mood — it is a circuit people will sell
Animal work on orexin and persistence is real. The leap from rat breakpoint to a human product is not.
The scene
A headline arrives: researchers have found cells that keep you motivated. The laboratory did not say you can subscribe to drive. The marketplace will be tempted to.
What the named evidence actually holds
Dong, Mizoguchi and colleagues (2026), in PNAS, report that in rats, orexin neuron activity tracks reward prediction and effort, and that inhibiting those neurons reduces reward-seeking. Activating them raised breakpoints in a progressive-ratio task; the authors also note an asymmetry — the cells appear necessary for sustaining motivated behaviour in that setting, while simply turning them up is not a guaranteed surplus of drive.
That is careful animal work. It is not a finding about human offices, classrooms, or consumer “motivation” devices. Berridge and Robinson (2016) remind us that wanting and liking are dissociable. A circuit that supports persistence is not the same as a reason to persist.
Without prejudice
Celebrate the science. Refuse the inferred lifestyle. Cells do not want a promotion. People do — or they do not — for reasons a rat breakpoint cannot fully tell.
