Why video calls drain social attention faster than rooms do
Back-to-back video days often feel heavier than rooms. A theoretical account names the load. It is not a universal law of the medium.

Many people finish a day of video meetings more depleted than a day of rooms. Underneath the complaint sits a tractable account of social cognition under incomplete signals.

Bailenson (2021), in Technology, Mind, and Behavior, offers a theoretical argument — not a single experiment — for “nonverbal overload”: extra cognitive load from performing nonverbal cues, the unusual intensity of face-on-face at close apparent distance, reduced mobility, and self-view as a mirror the meeting never used to provide. Subsequent scale work (the ZEF scale) tries to measure the resulting fatigue. Meta-analytic follow-ups exist and still debate size and moderators.
Individual differences are large. Some people report relief from reduced in-person demand. Context and control matter as much as medium.
Practice
Turn off self-view when you can. Batch so recovery is real. Prefer walking audio when visual presence is not required. If camera-always-on is “professionalism,” ask what kind of attention you are buying.
The goal is not fewer tools. It is fewer continuous demands on social cognition without recovery.
