When search replaces memory, what do we still know?
External memory is ancient — notebooks, maps, other people. Instant search changes the bargain: we outsource not only facts, but the paths that once made facts ours.

Knowing that, knowing how, knowing where
Cognitive science has long distinguished knowing that from knowing how. Digital life added a third mode: knowing where to look.
Sparrow, Liu and Wegner (2011) argued that the internet has become a primary form of transactive memory — knowledge stored outside the person, with the person remembering how to find it. When people expected to have later access, they recalled the information itself less well and the location of it better. The paper is a landmark and, like all landmarks, not the end of the debate. It is cited as the named source of a bargain, not as a complete theory of 2026.
Roediger and Karpicke (2006) showed that retrieving something strengthens it more than restudying it. Skipping recall because a device is faster is rational in the moment and, on that account, costly over years.
A practical standard
Keep external memory for what is stable, reference-heavy, and low-stakes. Keep internal memory for what you must judge quickly, teach, or detect as wrong. When you look something up, close the tab and restate it. That friction is how knowing returns from “somewhere” to “mine.”
